My HYROX Race Lessons (And the Science-Backed Reasons to Do Crazy Hard Things)

I need to be honest with you: I didn’t enjoy my HYROX race last week.  Not one moment felt like I was “crushing it.” I was slower than I wanted to be, overheated, disappointed, and questioning myself more than once.

And you know what? That makes it the most valuable thing I’ve done so far this year.

This is the story of how a tough race taught me more about resilience, self-efficacy, and mental strength than any perfect performance ever could.

It’s about what happened when I debriefed with my AI coach ChatGPT, how the science of stress inoculation actually works,  and why doing hard physical things — especially when they don’t go to plan — can radically change how you show up in every other area of your life.

If you’ve ever felt disappointed after something you worked hard for… or wondered whether pushing yourself physically is “worth it”, this episode will shift how you see challenge, confidence, and growth.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Why the challenges that stretch you don’t always feel good in the moment and why they matter more because of it
  • What HYROX actually is and why it’s become a $140 million global phenomenon that makes “average people feel like athletes”
  • Why this was the first event I’ve paid for that I genuinely didn’t enjoy (and why that made it so valuable)
  • How self-efficacy, stress inoculation, and generalized confidence actually work (backed by research from Albert Bandura)
  • Why my brain learned more from struggle than it would have from a perfect race

Key Takeaways:

The ones that stretch you don’t always feel good in the moment, but they always lead to growth. After cycling down Africa, dragon boating across the English Channel, and competing at Ultimate Frisbee championships, I’ve learned that the challenges that don’t go perfectly are often the most transformative.

Mastery experiences come from overcoming obstacles, not easy wins. Albert Bandura’s research on self-efficacy shows that the most powerful way to build belief in yourself isn’t through smooth victories, it’s through pushing through when things are hard.

Voluntary stress trains your nervous system. When you put yourself through physical challenges, you’re practicing stress inoculation—teaching your body that discomfort isn’t dangerous, that you can function under pressure, and that you have more capacity than you think.

Disappointment is data, not failure. My slower-than-hoped time wasn’t a failure, it gave me specific, actionable intel: I need to practice running after heavy load and stress, not just fresh running. I need heat adaptation training. That’s information I can use.

You’re building mental muscles for emotional regulation. When you’re overheating, your legs are burning, and you’re practicing staying calm when you want to quit, you’re doing reps of managing emotions under duress. Those skills transfer to stressful work situations and personal challenges.

A little reminder:

On the other side of discomfort is a version of you who’s stronger, more confident, and more resilient than you are right now.

What’s that thing that feels just beyond your current edge? Not impossible, but definitely uncomfortable? That’s the thing you want to walk towards.

Because every uncomfortable moment builds skills that put you in the best possible place to live your best life, be the pilot of your life, and know that you can handle anything thrown at you.

Sometimes the most transformative experiences are the ones where nothing goes according to plan, and you keep going anyway.
